Unfortunately we are on a system that you can not reject RR and the preview pane still counts as opening the email. All of mine come from outside of the system, and I delete the confirmation.

The COO already had the requirement from me and was walking into the boss' office. I did not have the read receipt turned off, but I had read the email in the preview pane, taken action, and simply deleted it. One time, a senior's EA called me and asked me who I thought I was deleting an email without reading it (from her).

I have not used MS Outlook in a while, but the versions I used allowed me to configure to not send read receipts and I used a preview pane so I could actually see email content without opening.many, many times I deleted emails without opening. Crazy as it sounds, a phone call like "Sally, I just sent you the details of new developments with the Johnson file and it is hot" and Sally's acknowledgement is another example of communication effectiveness. Depending on my job, there may be 50 envelopes on my desk-yours may be on the bottom.Ī directed response to an email serves as an acknowledgement and is suitable. If you send me a FEDEX and I sign for it, that means I signed for a FEDEX, not that I opened it, read it, or understood it-it means an envelope is on my desk. The idiot that proclaims "Sally read that email at 9:13 AM, so the burning fire became hers to put out and my hands are clean" doesn't understand how to communicate. I believe in MS outlook there is a way to permanently turn off return receipt, but I don't remember how.Ī read receipt means nothing. Unless it's something legal like you said I NEVER return receipt. If they have been asked to not use it and still do, they are unprofessional. It's an aggressive attitude to have when one uses RR all the time. However, to use RR regularly is a sign that someone is controlling, lacks trust of others, and wants to monitor how quickly or slowly you respond to their emails. Return receipt emails should only be used for very urgent and important emails that the sender needs confirmation that it has been opened and will be responded to accordingly. Unless there are business legitimate reasons for using return receipts on emails it is just unprofessional, rude and down right creepy in a stalky way. I have asked the frequent flyers to kindly stop, told them the receiver can see it when the email opens, asked them why they are doing it, explained how it made me feel and they still do it. I know my behavior is passive aggressive but being direct did not work. I'll usually send the email to the offender before I leave for the day. I admit that when I see the return receipt flash, I quickly write my reply and then send it to my draft folder. Now assuming they are not legal requirements (that I do get on occasion), why oh why are people using them? That was a rhetorical question by the way, no need to answer. UGG, I get them daily and it seems they are becoming more frequent.
